Press Release: Channel Master Subscription-FreeOTA DVR

New Product Promises TV Freedom, Revolutionizes Over-The-AirBroadcast TV Viewing, Recording & Streaming Video

Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 16, 2013 – Channel Master today unveiled a new subscription-free consumer DVR that promises to revolutionize how people record and view free over-the-air TV programming. DVR+™, an unrivaled, all-in-one, easy-to-use, broadcast TV DVR, combines multiple features into what may be the ultimate affordable cord-cutting solution to ensure anyone can watch and record free HD-quality broadcast TV, no broadband connection required, and also access streaming video services and enhanced features when a broadband connection is used.

DVR+ combines a High Definition dual-tuner DVR, the economical flexibility of an external hard drive, streaming video services and a unique integrated TV programming guide all in one ultra-slim device, standing just over one-half inch in height.

For consumers seeking alternatives to pay TV services, DVR+ makes it easy to watch and record free over-the-air TV programming, including all of your favorite network shows, news, and sports, provided by your local broadcast stations and affiliates.

Today, in most major U.S. markets, a great number of broadcast channels, in addition to ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS and The CW, are available for free. This also includes channels carrying non-English language programming such as Spanish and Korean that are not always offered through pay TV providers. With DVR+, consumers have access to all over-the-air programming available in their area, not just the programming that providers and manufacturers choose to offer.

DVR+ is the perfect broadcast TV DVR solution when combined with a digital antenna. When also combined with a broadband connection, consumers will enjoy an enhanced program guide and access to online streaming services. Future feature upgrades are available either through a direct broadband connection or USB transfer.

“Consumers today are demanding freedom and flexibility for their TV experience,” said Coty Youtsey, President of Channel Master. “We believe the DVR+ delivers tremendous value, on the simple premise that consumers are rediscovering free over-the-air broadcast programming in the midst of a fragmented TV-delivery industry and the resulting rising costs associated with subscription-based services. Consumers are clearly seeking alternatives and Channel Master is providing a premium option with DVR+.”

DVR+ lets users pause or rewind live TV up to one hour, and dual tuners allow them to record one program while watching another, or simultaneously record two programs. The DVR+ comes with 16GB of internal flash memory to get users up-and-running out of the box with the ability to pause live TV and store a limited number of recordings. Full extended DVR functionality is enabled with the connection of a USB external hard drive, providing the ultimate choice in personal storage capacity.

The DVR+, priced at $249.99, is available now for pre-order at www.channelmaster.com and will begin shipping in early January. Channel Master will announce product availability and additional retail partners at the 2014 International CES in January.

Consumers interested in having access to the latest on-demand movies and TV shows will enjoy VUDU, a subscription-free video streaming service that offers thousands of blockbusters, Hollywood classics and indie films, already included in the DVR+ programming guide, with additional popular streaming services coming soon.

For a true TV Everywhere and integrated 2nd Screen experience, DVR+ is compatible with the Slingbox 500, allowing users to watch their TV on a mobile device either around the home or from anywhere in the world with a broadband connection. Channel Master also offers an optional Wi-Fi adapter for the DVR+, enabling simple connectivity to the home network, no direct connection required. DVR+ supports Dolby® Digital Plus surround sound and provides energy efficiency through ultra-low power consumption.

I've been a user of both the older Channel Master DVR product (CM-7000PAL) and Tivo 3 Series with unlimited subscription (Home Theater and Living Room, respectively).

The ol' dual-tuner Channel Master has never failed in five years of use, and gives a beautiful picture, with a bit less pixelation (in my subjective viewing) than the Tivo. But, at regular seating distances, both give a beautiful HD picture.

Both run well from a Harmony remote. Of course, the Tivo "season pass" is invaluable, and the older Channel Master only does time/day of week recording, so some shows might be missed on short-notice time changes.

The newest Channel Master looks great: thin and sleek, with a new interface that allows live picture while viewing the channel guide (old one didn't do that at all). The "apps" look good, and bypass my Tivo in that respect, which tries to do Netflix via it's "G" wifi adapter, but it is useless. (Roku to the rescue!)

We'll see if the new Channel Master has the oomph and GUI-goodness to keep up, and surpass, the Tivo.

Cheers, HT Guys!
